Patent laws must change to attract pharmaceutical companies to the UK

Posted by CK Group (Science, Clinical & IT) on Tuesday, 06 December 2011

As reported by The Register, patent laws must change in order to both attract pharmaceutical companies to the UK and boost drug development.

According to the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) some pharma companies are at risk of breaking patent law during clinical testing. It is therefore of critical importance that patent laws are changed so that these companies are not reluctant to develop innovative new drugs.

According to the IPO. “The government acknowledges that the current wording of UK patent legislation does put some parties at risk of patent infringement when preparing and running UK clinical or field trials involving innovative drugs.”

The IPO is therefore hopeful that by amending the legislation and removing the risk of patent infringement, more pharmaceutical companies will be attracted to the UK.
