Wessex Foods of Suffolk Hit by Fire Crisis

Posted by CK Science on Tuesday, 13 July 2010

As reported by the BBC News website, the food manufacturing company, Wessex Foods based in Lowestoft, Suffolk, has been badly damaged by a fire which started on Sunday morning.

Wessex Food process mince and burgers at their site in Lowestoft and employ 150 staff.

The flames were tackled by one hundred firefighters and two air support units. After working throughout the night it has now been reported that crews have managed to extinguish flames underneath the rubble of the building.

Kevin Burden, of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, said the design of the building had given crews some difficulty.

“The building is designed to keep food stuffs cool so there"s a large number of rooms each of which is well insulated and this means the area burns readily.

“They then collapse leaving the fire to burn underneath the rubble of the building structure.”
